Brigels

Coordinates: 46°46’14″N   9°04’00″E   1260m ASL

I hesitate to include a page on the Brigels landing field, because I have never used it, although I have flown over the area dozens of times.  It is located 83 km from Fiesch, around half way between the Oberalppass and Chur, and as buses from the nearby village down to Tavanasa station to connect with a train are infrequent, it is much more convenient to land in the valley below.  However, it could be useful in adverse conditions, and avoids the risk of breaching the Tavanasa Heliport airspace.

This large official landing field lies on the plateau between the village of Brigels and an oblong turquoise lake about ½km to the east, a striking landmark which can be seen from the air from a considerable distance, facilitating easy identification.

Approaching Brigels from the west

As shown on the image below, it lies just within the circle of 2.5km radius around the Heliport in which increased caution is recommended, but outside the red zone in which paragliders and hang gliders are forbidden to fly at less than 1350m ASL.

Position of Brigels LZ in relation to Tavanasa Heliport airspace

As Brigels is over 400m above the valley floor, the usual easterly valley breeze is likely to exert only a mild influence here, and may well be overridden by larger-scale effects.  These may be positive, often a southwesterly meteo flow which has been helping your progress throughout your flight, or negative, such as the breakthrough of a north wind (especially in Bise conditions).  However, the field is large and flat, without significant surrounding obstructions, and the chance of strong winds here on a flyable day is low.  The published GPS coordinates suggest that one is supposed to land in the south-east corner of the field, but I would prioritise avoiding any long grass.

After packing up, you will need to walk into the village to catch a bus to get down to Tavanasa station in the valley below, or try hitching – Brigels is relatively popular with tourists in summer.
